When to book a newborn photography session is one of the first questions many expectant parents ask. Ideally, your newborn session should be reserved during pregnancy, giving us plenty of time to plan everything before your baby arrives.
As a newborn photographer in Enfield, North London, I usually schedule sessions around your estimated due date and then confirm the final date once your baby is born. Babies rarely follow calendars, so there is always flexibility built into the booking process.

When to Book a Newborn Photography Session in London?
The best time to book a newborn photography session is during pregnancy, ideally after your 20-week scan. Booking early gives you more choice of dates and allows us to plan your session without any last-minute pressure.
Your due date is used as a guide rather than a fixed appointment. Once your baby arrives, we arrange the final session date based on their birth date and how you are both feeling. This means you don’t need to worry if your baby arrives earlier or later than expected.
For those planning both pregnancy and newborn photographs, a maternity session can also be a beautiful way to document the months leading up to your baby’s arrival. You can explore my maternity photography sessions in London if you would like to capture both chapters of your journey.
What Is the Best Age for Newborn Photos?
Newborn photography is often associated with the first two weeks after birth, when babies are usually very sleepy and naturally curl into those tiny newborn positions. However, there is no single perfect day that works for every baby.
Your baby’s wellbeing always comes first. Feeding, recovery after birth, weight gain and how both you and your baby are feeling are more important than following a rigid timeline.
If your baby is a little older, don’t worry. Beautiful newborn photographs can still be created beyond those earliest days, with the session adapted to your baby’s stage, comfort and needs.
If your baby is already around four weeks old, you may also find my guide to newborn photography at four weeks helpful.
What If My Baby Arrives Earlier or Later Than Expected?
That is completely normal and already taken into account when your newborn session is booked. Your estimated due date simply helps me reserve space in my diary around the time your baby is expected to arrive.
Once your little one is here, we confirm the most suitable date for your session. If your baby arrives earlier than expected or needs a little more time before being photographed, we can adjust the plan accordingly.
My nursing background has also shaped the calm and careful way I work with newborns, especially when a baby needs a little extra consideration.
Why Book Your Newborn Session Before Baby Arrives?
The first few weeks with a new baby are incredibly special, but they can also be a busy time of feeding, recovering and adjusting to a completely new rhythm. Booking your newborn photography session during pregnancy means that one important decision is already taken care of before your baby arrives.
It also gives us plenty of time to discuss your preferences, the style of photographs you love and what to expect on the day. When your baby arrives, all you need to do is let me know and we can confirm the most suitable date for your session.
My aim is to make the entire experience feel calm, unhurried and beautifully simple, allowing you to focus on your baby while I take care of creating the memories.
Should I Book Maternity and Newborn Photography Together?
If you would love to preserve both your pregnancy and your baby’s first weeks, booking your maternity and newborn photography together creates a beautifully connected story of this special chapter in your family’s life.
Your maternity session captures the anticipation, connection and beauty of waiting for your little one, while your newborn session preserves those first tiny details and the emotions of finally having your baby in your arms.
My Bump to Baby Collection brings both sessions together as one thoughtfully planned experience, making it simple to document your journey from pregnancy to those precious first weeks with your baby.
How Should I Prepare for My Newborn Photography Session?
Once your newborn session is booked, there is very little you need to worry about. Before your appointment, I’ll guide you through everything you need to know so you can arrive feeling relaxed and prepared.
Feeding your baby shortly before or at the beginning of the session can help them settle comfortably. I also recommend bringing your usual changing essentials, extra milk if needed and anything your baby normally finds comforting.
There is no need to worry about your baby sleeping throughout the session. We follow their rhythm, allowing plenty of time for feeding, cuddles and settling whenever needed. The experience is designed to be calm and completely baby-led.
Parents and siblings can also be included, allowing us to create not only beautiful photographs of your newborn, but meaningful portraits of your growing family.
