Some newborn sessions stay with you long after the photographs are delivered. This was one of them.

Welcoming a premature baby into my photography studio in Enfield was an incredibly special experience. As both a newborn photographer and a qualified nurse with experience in neonatal care, I approached the session with the same priorities I bring to every newborn photoshoot: safety, patience, comfort and respect for the baby’s individual needs.

Every newborn is different, but babies who arrive earlier than expected may need even more time, gentleness and flexibility. For this session, there was no rush and no pressure to achieve a particular pose. The baby led the pace from beginning to end.

My nursing background and newborn photography

Before becoming a professional photographer, I studied nursing for six years and worked across different areas of healthcare, including neonatal care. That experience has never left me.

Understanding how delicate newborn babies can be influences the way I work in my studio every day. I pay close attention to breathing, temperature, positioning, skin colour and the small signals babies give when they need a break.

Photography is important, but a beautiful photograph is never more important than a baby’s wellbeing.

Creating a calm session for a premature baby

A newborn photography session should never feel rushed. With a premature baby, this becomes even more important.

We allowed plenty of time for feeding, settling and cuddles. I kept the studio warm and peaceful, used soft fabrics and simple setups, and adapted everything to what the baby was comfortable with.

Rather than trying to force traditional newborn poses, I focused on natural positions and tiny details — little fingers, delicate features and the connection between baby and parents.

A baby-led approach to newborn photography

I believe the safest and most beautiful newborn sessions are baby-led. Some babies sleep deeply throughout their session; others need more feeding or reassurance. Both are completely normal.

Parents never need to worry about their baby “behaving” for photographs. My job is to adapt the session around your baby, not the other way around.

A baby-led approach to newborn photography

My newborn photography studio is based in Enfield, North London, and I welcome families from across London, including Barnet, Finchley, Muswell Hill, Haringey, Islington and Potters Bar.

If your baby arrived prematurely or you have any concerns about whether a newborn photography session would be suitable, you are always welcome to contact me before booking. We can talk through your baby’s circumstances and plan a session that feels comfortable for your family.
