How My Nursing Experience Helped Me Photograph a Premature Baby
Premature baby newborn photography requires patience, flexibility and an especially gentle approach. Every newborn session is different, but when a baby has arrived earlier than expected, their individual needs and comfort become even more important.
As a former nurse and newborn photographer in Enfield, North London, my experience has taught me to observe babies carefully, work at their pace and never rush a session. When this little baby came to my studio, creating a calm, safe and reassuring experience for both baby and parents was my priority.
A Gentle Approach to Premature Baby Newborn Photography
Babies who arrive prematurely may have experienced a very different beginning from the one their parents expected. By the time they come for their photography session, they may also be older than the traditional newborn age while still being very small and delicate.
That is why I never approach a newborn session with a rigid list of poses or expectations. I watch how the baby responds, allow plenty of time for feeding and settling, and adapt the session around what feels comfortable for them.
Beautiful photographs matter, but your baby’s wellbeing will always come first.
How My Nursing Background Shapes My Newborn Sessions
Before becoming a photographer, I worked as a nurse. That experience continues to influence the way I work with newborn babies today.
It taught me the importance of patience, careful observation and understanding that every baby communicates differently. During a newborn session, I pay close attention to the little signs that tell me when a baby is comfortable, when they need feeding or cuddles, and when it is time to pause.
Sessions are baby-led and unhurried. There is always time to stop, feed, change or simply hold your little one until they are ready to continue.

What If My Baby Arrives Earlier Than Expected?
If your baby arrives before their due date, please don’t worry about your photography booking. The date we reserve during pregnancy is based around your estimated due date and can be adjusted once your baby is here.
Your baby may need additional time before coming to the studio, and that is absolutely fine. We will choose the session date according to your circumstances and how both you and your baby are feeling.

A Calm and Baby-Led Experience
There is no expectation for your baby to sleep throughout the session or fit into a particular routine. Some babies settle quickly, while others need more feeding, cuddling or time with their parents.
My role is to create an environment where you never feel rushed. We work around your baby, not the other way around.
This gentle approach allows us to create timeless photographs while keeping the experience positive and comfortable for the whole family.
Why Every Premature Baby Photography Session Is Different
Every premature baby has their own story, which is why I never expect two sessions to look exactly the same. Some babies need more time to settle, while others are happiest being held close to their parents. I follow their cues throughout the session and adapt everything around what they need.
For me, premature baby newborn photography is not about achieving a perfect set of poses. It is about safely preserving the tiny details, connection and emotions that make this stage of your family’s story so meaningful. Your baby leads the session, and we simply follow.
