Is 4 Weeks Too Late for Newborn Photos? What Parents Need to Know
4 week old newborn photography is still possible, and if your baby is already four weeks old, you haven’t necessarily missed your chance to capture those precious early days.
Many parents believe newborn photography must take place within the first two weeks after birth. While those early days can make some sleepy poses easier, beautiful newborn photographs can often still be created with older babies.
What Is Different About Photographing an Older Newborn?
Many parents are told that newborn photography must take place within the first 7–14 days after birth. This can make those first few weeks feel unnecessarily stressful.
The early newborn stage can certainly make some sleepy, curled-up poses easier, but it doesn’t mean that your opportunity disappears once your baby reaches two or three weeks old.
Over the years, I have photographed many older newborns in my Enfield studio. The key is simply to adapt the session to the baby in front of me rather than expecting every baby to behave in exactly the same way.
Every 4 week old newborn photography session is different, which is why I adapt the pace, posing and wrapping to the baby in front of me.
At around four weeks old, babies are often more alert, stronger and increasingly interested in the world around them.
They may spend more time awake during their session, stretch their arms and legs more frequently and have stronger preferences about how they want to be positioned.
And that’s completely fine.
I use a baby-led approach, which means I never force a baby into a particular pose simply because it was part of the original plan.
If your baby is comfortable and sleepy, we may be able to create many of the traditional newborn poses. If they prefer being wrapped, held or photographed awake, I adapt the session accordingly.
Those wide-open eyes and little expressions can create some of my favourite photographs.
Can Older Babies Still Have Sleepy Newborn Photos?
Absolutely.
Many four-week-old babies still sleep beautifully during their newborn photography session.
However, I never promise that a baby of any age will sleep throughout their session. Babies are individuals, and their comfort and safety always come first.
Some older newborns may find certain curled-up positions more difficult than younger babies. In that situation, we simply move on to something they are happier with.
There are plenty of beautiful alternatives.
A 4 week old newborn photography session may look slightly different from a session with a two-week-old baby, but there are still plenty of beautiful photographs we can create.
What If My Baby Doesn't Sleep?
Your baby does not need to sleep for the entire session.
Awake newborn photographs can be incredibly special. Eye contact, tiny expressions, stretches and even little yawns are all part of your baby’s story at this age.
We can also use wrapping, baskets, the little bed and other props depending on what your baby is comfortable with.
My studio has a selection of newborn outfits, wraps and props available, so you don’t need to bring everything with you.
Family and Sibling Photographs
Even if your baby is a little older, we can still include photographs with parents and siblings.
If you are wondering how family images can be created without everyone looking directly at the camera, you may also like my guide to family newborn photos without showing your face.
These images often become some of the most meaningful photographs from the entire session.
Your baby will never be this small again, and photographs of them safely in your arms help preserve just how tiny they once were.
When Should You Book?
If your baby has already arrived and you are worried that you’ve left it too late, please don’t wait simply because you think you’ve missed the newborn window.
Get in touch and tell me your baby’s age.
I can advise you on what we are likely to achieve and whether a newborn session is still suitable.

Your Baby Doesn't Suddenly Become “Too Old”
There isn’t one exact day when newborn photography stops being possible.
The session simply changes as your baby grows.
At four weeks old, we may need a little more patience, flexibility and a slightly different approach — but that doesn’t mean we can’t create a beautiful gallery of your baby’s earliest weeks.
So if you’re looking at your four-week-old baby and thinking, “Have I left it too late?”
When parents contact me about 4 week old newborn photography, I always explain that every baby is different and the session will be adapted to their individual needs.
Please ask before assuming the answer is yes.
