Three Generation Family Photography – More Than a Birthday Session
Three generation family photography doesn’t always need to begin with booking a traditional family photoshoot. Sometimes, the perfect opportunity is already there.
A child’s birthday is one of those moments.
Parents often arrive at my Enfield studio thinking mainly about photographs of their little birthday boy or girl. There may be a beautiful backdrop, balloons, a favourite character, a cake and lots of excitement. Naturally, the child is the star of the session.
But some of the photographs that may become the most meaningful aren’t necessarily the ones of the child alone.
They are the photographs that show who was there to celebrate this chapter of childhood with them.
Three generation family photography during a birthday session
Birthday sessions give us a wonderful opportunity to create more than birthday portraits.
Once everything is prepared and the family is already together, I always think it’s worth taking a little time for photographs with the people who came along.
It doesn’t need to become another full photoshoot. Sometimes just a few minutes can create something incredibly valuable.
In this session, we started with photographs of mum and her little boy together. The colourful birthday setup remained part of the story, but the focus changed from decorations to their relationship.
The result is still clearly a photograph from his third birthday, but now mum is part of that memory too.
Parents – please get into the photograph
I know how tempting it can be to stay behind the camera.
Parents often tell me that the session is “just for the children”. Sometimes they haven’t planned an outfit, don’t feel particularly camera-ready or simply assume they don’t need photographs of themselves.
But your child will see these photographs differently.
They won’t be looking for perfect hair or wondering whether your outfit matched the backdrop. They’ll see their mum or dad exactly as they remember them from childhood.
That’s why I encourage parents to appear in at least a few photographs during their child’s session.
A cuddle, a laugh or a quiet moment together can become just as important as the carefully planned birthday portrait.
And then Grandma joined us...
This is where this particular session became even more special.
We already had photographs of the birthday boy and photographs with his mum. Then Grandma joined them.
Suddenly, one birthday photograph became a portrait of three generations of one family.
Grandmother. Mother. Son.
The birthday decorations are still there and tell us when and why the photograph was taken, but they’re no longer the most important part of the image.
The people are.
Why three generation family photography matters
Families change constantly. Children grow incredibly quickly, parents change with them and grandparents become part of the stories children will one day tell about their childhood.
Yet grandparents are often missing from our professional family photographs.
We might have hundreds of phone pictures, but fewer photographs where everyone is actually present in the frame together.
This is why three generation family photography can be so meaningful. It creates a visible connection between generations and preserves a piece of family history without needing the photograph to feel formal or old-fashioned.
The UK’s Family Lives also provides resources supporting family relationships across different stages of family life.
One birthday – a photograph for generations
When I look at these images, I love the colourful birthday setting and the happiness of a little boy celebrating turning three.
But I think the final photograph may become particularly special with time.
Today it’s a photograph from his birthday.
Years from now, it will also be a photograph of three generations together at one particular moment in their lives.
And that is the real beauty of three generation family photography.
Sometimes you book a photography session to celebrate your child’s birthday – and leave with a little piece of your family’s history.
