I Don’t Feel Photogenic During Pregnancy – Is a Maternity Session Still for Me?

Maternity photography London clients sometimes tell me something before their session that I have heard many times over the years:

“I’m just not photogenic.”

Pregnancy can be an incredible time, but that doesn’t mean every woman feels confident in front of a camera. Your body is changing, your usual clothes may fit differently and you may simply not feel like yourself.

If that sounds familiar, you are certainly not alone.

And no — you don’t need to feel photogenic to have beautiful maternity photographs.

You don't need to know how to pose

One of the biggest misconceptions about a professional maternity photoshoot is that the women you see in photographs naturally know what to do in front of the camera.

Most don’t.

It is my job to guide you.

I will show you where to place your hands, how to position your shoulders, where to look and how small changes in posture can completely change a photograph.

You don’t need to arrive knowing your best angle or practise poses before your session.

The photograph above is a perfect example of how several elements come together. The pose, lighting, movement of the fabric, camera angle and styling all contribute to the final image.

Maternity photography London is about creating the right conditions

Being “photogenic” isn’t something I expect from my clients.

Professional photography is about understanding how light falls across the body, choosing flattering angles and creating a composition that works for the individual person in front of the camera.

During maternity photography London sessions in my Enfield studio, I adjust these elements throughout the shoot rather than expecting you to perform for the camera.

Sometimes moving a hand a few centimetres makes a difference. Sometimes turning the body slightly changes the entire silhouette.

These are things I watch for while you simply follow my direction.

If feeling comfortable in front of the camera is something you worry about, you may also find my guide to preparing for a family photography session helpful.

Your changing body deserves kindness

Pregnancy affects every woman differently.

Some women love their changing shape. Others struggle with it. And many probably experience a mixture of both.

A maternity session isn’t about pretending those feelings don’t exist.

It is about creating something beautiful from this very temporary stage of your life.

According to the NHS pregnancy guide, pregnancy brings many physical and emotional changes as your baby develops. There is no requirement to feel wonderful about every single one of them.

Your photography session should meet you where you are.

Styling can completely transform how you feel

What you wear also makes an enormous difference.

A maternity portrait doesn’t have to mean standing in your everyday clothes and hoping for the best.

We can use dresses, fabrics and carefully selected styling to create a completely different feeling.

The flowing orange fabric in this photograph creates movement and drama while drawing attention towards the pregnant silhouette.

But maternity photography doesn’t always need to be dramatic.

Your session can be elegant, minimal, soft, glamorous or simple. We choose the direction according to what feels right for you.

You are allowed to take up space in your family's photographs

Women are often the people taking photographs of everyone else.

Then years pass and they realise they’re missing from a huge part of their family’s visual history.

Pregnancy is one of those chapters that can disappear surprisingly quickly.

Today, your bump is part of everyday life. Soon, you’ll be holding the baby you’ve been waiting for.

That’s one reason maternity photography London is about much more than creating a flattering portrait. It’s about making sure you exist in the photographs from this part of your family’s story too.

What if I'm still nervous?

You don’t need to pretend you’re confident.

If there is something you’re particularly conscious of, we can take that into consideration when choosing outfits, lighting and poses.

And we don’t need to create every photograph in the same style. We can try different looks and discover what makes you feel most comfortable.

My Maternity Photography London sessions are designed to guide you through that process rather than leave you wondering what to do next.

You don’t need modelling experience.

You don’t need to know how to pose.

And you definitely don’t need to arrive feeling “photogenic”.

You simply need to arrive as you are.

I’ll take care of the photography.

Knowing who will be behind the camera can also make the experience feel more relaxed, so you may like to read a little more about me and my approach.
