How to Choose a Newborn Photographer – 10 Essential Questions

If you’re wondering how to choose a newborn photographer, beautiful photographs are probably the first thing you notice. You look through portfolios, compare styles and perhaps check prices. But when the person behind the camera will also be handling and posing your tiny baby, there is much more to consider.

Newborn photography is very different from a standard portrait session. It requires patience, an understanding of newborn behaviour, careful positioning and the ability to adapt when a baby needs feeding, comforting or simply doesn’t like a particular pose.

After more than a decade of photographing newborn babies, these are the 10 questions I believe every parent should consider before booking a newborn photographer.

1. How much experience do you have with newborn babies?

A photographer may be extremely talented and still have limited experience with newborns.

Ask how long they have specialised in newborn photography and how regularly they photograph babies.

Experience isn’t only about creating beautiful images. It becomes particularly important when the session doesn’t go exactly as planned.

A newborn photographer should know how to adapt to different babies rather than expecting every baby to behave in the same way.

2. How do you keep my baby safe during posing?

When considering how to choose a newborn photographer, this should be one of your most important questions.

Some newborn poses require additional support. Others may be created as composites, where separate photographs are carefully combined during editing so that the baby remains supported throughout.

Parents should feel completely comfortable asking how a photograph is created.

No image is important enough to compromise a baby’s safety.

The NHS safer sleep guidance for babies also provides useful general information for parents about safe positioning and reducing risks around newborn sleep.

3. Is your newborn photography baby-led?

I strongly believe that the session should adapt to the baby rather than expecting the baby to adapt to the session.

Some newborns sleep almost immediately. Others need several feeds and lots of cuddles before settling. Some love being wrapped, while others prefer having their hands free.

This is completely normal.

A baby-led approach means watching your baby’s cues and changing the plan when necessary.

If a baby clearly dislikes a position, I would much rather move on and create something else than insist on getting one particular photograph.

4. What happens if my baby doesn't sleep?

This is one of the most common concerns I hear from parents.

Your baby does not need to sleep for the entire session.

Awake newborn photographs can be absolutely beautiful. We can also allow time for feeding, changing and settling.

An experienced photographer should have alternatives available rather than making parents feel that the session has failed simply because their newborn decided to stay awake.

5. What if my baby won't do a particular pose?

When learning how to choose a newborn photographer, look for someone whose portfolio shows variety rather than exactly the same poses for every baby.

Every newborn has different flexibility, preferences and temperament.

Occasionally parents arrive with a particular image they love. We can certainly use photographs as inspiration, but I would never promise that every baby can safely or comfortably achieve every pose.

Sometimes we modify it. Sometimes we create an alternative.

And sometimes we simply don’t do that pose.

Your baby’s comfort always comes first.

6. How long will the newborn session take?

Newborn sessions aren’t usually something that should be rushed.

A full session may take around 2.5–3 hours, although occasionally a very settled baby allows us to finish much sooner.

The length can also depend on the package, whether family and sibling photographs are included and how many feeding or settling breaks your baby needs.

This flexibility is one of the reasons I don’t believe newborn photography should run according to a strict minute-by-minute schedule.

7. Can parents and siblings be included?

If family photographs matter to you, ask before booking rather than assuming they are included.

For many families, photographs of their newborn with Mum, Dad and siblings eventually become some of the most meaningful images from the entire session.

They also document something the baby-only portraits cannot: how incredibly small your newborn looked in your arms.

On my newborn sessions, family and sibling photographs can form part of the experience.

8. What exactly is included in the price?

Understanding how to choose a newborn photographer also means understanding exactly what you’re paying for.

Ask whether the advertised amount includes:

the photography session, professionally edited digital photographs, parent and sibling images, use of props and outfits, and any printed products.

Also check whether there is a separate session fee followed by an additional image purchase afterwards.

Different pricing structures aren’t necessarily better or worse. You simply need to know the real total cost before booking.

9. Are outfits, wraps and props provided?

Preparing for a newborn session shouldn’t feel like packing for a holiday.

Ask what the photographer provides.

In my studio, newborn wraps, outfits and props are available, so parents don’t need to arrive with a suitcase full of things for the baby.

I usually recommend bringing the practical essentials your baby normally needs and any sentimental item you would particularly like incorporated into the photographs.

10. Do you genuinely love the photographer's style?

Finally, look beyond price and availability.

When deciding how to choose a newborn photographer, spend some time looking through their work and ask yourself a very simple question:

Would I want photographs like these on my walls five or ten years from now?

Photography styles can be dramatically different.

You might love neutral and timeless images, colourful styled setups, natural photographs, carefully posed portraits or more artistic fine-art imagery.

There is no correct answer.

The important thing is that you choose a photographer because their work feels right for you, rather than expecting them to reproduce another photographer’s style.

How to choose a newborn photographer you can trust

Ultimately, learning how to choose a newborn photographer isn’t about finding the longest package or the lowest price.

Start with safety.

Look at experience.

Ask how the photographer responds when a baby doesn’t sleep or doesn’t like a pose. Understand exactly what your package includes. Look through their portfolio carefully.

And don’t be afraid to ask questions.

A professional newborn photographer should understand why parents want reassurance before placing their new baby into someone else’s hands.

Beautiful photographs are important.

But the experience of creating them should feel safe, calm and comfortable for both you and your baby.
