Why You Should Photograph Your Child With Their Childhood Pet
Childhood pet photography is about much more than having a beautiful photograph of the family dog. For a child, a pet can be a best friend, a playmate, a source of comfort and a huge part of what home feels like.
We photograph birthdays, first days of school, holidays and family celebrations, yet some of the relationships that fill our children’s ordinary days are surprisingly easy to forget to document properly.
The dog waiting by the door after school. The cuddles on the sofa. A favourite game in the garden. Little hands automatically reaching out for a familiar furry friend. These moments may seem completely ordinary today, but one day they can become some of the strongest memories of childhood.
That is exactly why childhood pet photography can become such a meaningful part of a family gallery.
Childhood pet photography preserves a part of childhood
Think about the pet you grew up with.
You may remember where they slept, the funny things they did, the sound of their paws around the house or how they waited for you to come home. Even decades later, those seemingly insignificant details can stay with us.
For many children, their dog is simply part of growing up.
That’s why I believe photographs of children with their pets deserve a place alongside traditional family portraits. They document not only what everyone looked like, but also who was important in your child’s everyday world.
I also love creating an individual portrait of the family pet. They don’t always need to be sitting perfectly or looking directly at the camera. A familiar expression, a tilted head or even a little bit of mischief can be exactly what makes the photograph special.
Some childhood best friends have four paws
The photographs I love most aren’t necessarily the perfectly posed ones.
They’re often the photographs where you can actually see the relationship.
A cuddle. A child looking at their dog instead of at the camera. The way they naturally hold them or lean towards them. These small interactions tell us much more about their connection than a perfect smile ever could.
One day, this won’t simply be a photograph of a girl and her dog.
It will be a photograph of her childhood.
This is one of the reasons I love childhood pet photography. We aren’t only photographing an animal. We are preserving a relationship that belongs to a particular chapter of a child’s life.
Your pet is part of your family story
Family photography doesn’t have to mean everyone sitting together and looking at the camera.
During my Family Photography London sessions, I like to photograph the smaller relationships within a family too — siblings together, a child with each parent, parents together and, when appropriate, children with the animals they love.
These combinations make a gallery much more personal. They show what a family really looks and feels like rather than simply creating one formal group photograph.
Including a dog can also make a session more enjoyable for some children. Instead of thinking about posing for the camera, they have something familiar beside them. Talking to their pet, cuddling them or playing for a moment can create wonderfully natural expressions.
The same baby-led and safety-first approach also applies during my newborn photography sessions.
Does my dog need to be perfectly trained?
Absolutely not.
Photographing animals requires patience and flexibility. Dogs don’t understand that they’re attending a photography session, and I don’t expect them to behave like professional models.
We can give them time to explore the studio and become comfortable with their surroundings. Bringing favourite treats or a familiar toy can also be helpful. If your child and dog are being photographed together, safety is always more important than creating a particular pose. Parents know their own animals best, and we work with what feels comfortable for everyone.

Childhood pet photography becomes more valuable with time
Most of us have hundreds — sometimes thousands — of photographs on our phones. But there’s something different about deliberately creating a beautiful portrait of a relationship that matters.
Our children grow. Their personalities change. Their relationship with their pets changes too. And unfortunately, animals are part of our lives for a much shorter time than we would like.
That doesn’t mean childhood pet photography needs to feel sad. Quite the opposite.
It’s about celebrating the relationship while it is happening.
A photograph taken today might simply make you smile. In ten or twenty years, the very same photograph could instantly take your child back to the home they grew up in and the four-legged friend who was waiting there for them.
