Newborn Photos With Siblings: 7 Beautiful Tips for Families

Can You Have Newborn Photos With Older Siblings?

Newborn photos with siblings are often some of the most meaningful photographs from an entire newborn session.

For an older child, welcoming a new baby into the family is a huge change. Suddenly they are a big brother or sister, and capturing the very beginning of that relationship is something I always love to include.

Parents sometimes worry that their older child won’t sit still, won’t want to hold the baby or simply won’t cooperate.

That’s completely normal.

Sibling photographs don’t need to be perfect. They need to feel like your children.

Sibling and family photographs can be included as part of my newborn photography in London sessions, and I adapt them to the age and confidence of the older child.

Neutral Colours Work Beautifully for Newborn Family Photos

One of the most important things to remember is that children don’t arrive at a photography studio knowing what we expect from them.

A toddler may be excited about the new baby for thirty seconds and then suddenly become much more interested in something on the other side of the studio.

An older child might be happy to cuddle the baby but not want to smile at the camera.

That’s okay.

Rather than expecting a child to perform, I work with what they are comfortable giving me.

Sometimes the most beautiful sibling photograph isn’t the one where everyone is looking directly at the camera. It might be a kiss on the baby’s head, a little hand being held or simply two children lying quietly together.

The Age of the Older Sibling Makes a Difference

Photographing a two-year-old with a newborn is very different from photographing a six- or eight-year-old sibling.

Older children can usually understand instructions and may feel confident holding their new brother or sister.

With younger children, we need to be much more flexible.

For toddlers, I often choose positions where the newborn can be safely supported without expecting the older child to hold them independently.

This allows us to create beautiful newborn photos with siblings while keeping the experience relaxed for everyone.

Safety Always Comes Before the Photograph

No sibling photograph is worth compromising a baby’s safety.

The position I choose depends on the age, confidence and behaviour of the older child as well as the needs of the newborn.

A young sibling may lie beside the baby rather than hold them. An older sibling may be able to cuddle the baby safely with guidance.

Everything is adapted to the children in front of me.

This is also why I never promise one exact sibling pose before a session. We can have ideas, but the final photograph needs to work safely for both children.

What If My Toddler Doesn't Want to Cooperate?

This is probably one of the most common worries parents have about newborn sibling photography.

Please don’t put too much pressure on them before the session.

A new baby already represents an enormous change in a young child’s world. Expecting them to suddenly become perfectly behaved for photographs can make the experience harder rather than easier.

Instead, I prefer to give younger children a little time.

We can talk, play and let them become familiar with the studio before asking too much from them.

Sometimes we get the sibling photograph immediately.

Sometimes we come back to it later.

Both are completely normal.

For parents interested in how children can adjust to the arrival of a new baby, NHS guidance also recommends involving older siblings while recognising that children can respond differently and may need time to adjust

Let Older Children Show Their Personality

Older siblings don’t always need to sit perfectly beside the baby and smile directly at the camera.

Sometimes I will ask them to look at their new brother or sister, touch their tiny hand, give them a gentle kiss or simply cuddle close.

These little interactions often create much more meaningful photographs.

They also allow the older child to feel involved rather than feeling that the entire session suddenly revolves around the new baby.

That relationship is what I want to photograph.

Not just two children sitting next to each other.

Coordinate Their Clothing Without Making Everything Identical

Simple, coordinated clothing works beautifully for sibling photographs.

You don’t need to dress every child in exactly the same outfit.

Instead, choose colours and textures that work together so that the attention remains on their faces and interaction.

White, cream, beige, soft blues and other muted shades are particularly easy to coordinate.

Don't Forget a Photograph of Everyone Together

Once we have photographed your baby and their siblings, I also recommend creating photographs of the whole family together.

Those first weeks can feel incredibly busy, and parents are often the people least likely to appear in everyday photographs because they’re usually the ones taking them.

A family portrait records something different.

It shows your baby’s place within the family right at the beginning.

As your children grow, you can also continue documenting those relationships with a family photography in London session.

What If We Don't Get the Sibling Photograph We Planned?

Then we create something else.

Every child is different, and I would much rather adapt a photograph than turn the session into a stressful experience for an older sibling.

Sometimes that means changing the pose.

Sometimes it means giving them a break.

And sometimes the photograph that wasn’t planned becomes the one parents love most.

After many years of photographing newborns and families, I’ve learned that patience is far more useful than trying to force a child into a photograph they don’t want to create.

Newborn Photos With Siblings Are About a New Relationship

Your children are at the very beginning of their story together.

They don’t need to behave perfectly for that story to be worth photographing.

The little kiss, the curious look at the new baby, the hand resting beside theirs — those are the things that will change incredibly quickly.

Newborn photos with siblings preserve the moment when your older child first became someone’s big brother or sister.

And years from now, that relationship will look completely different.

That’s exactly why these photographs matter.
