How to Prepare for a Family Photography Session on the Day
Wondering how to prepare for a family photography session? The good news is that you don’t need to plan every little detail. The most beautiful family photographs come from genuine connection, movement and the little moments that happen naturally between you.
Before your session, I’ll guide you through the important details, from choosing what to wear to helping your children feel comfortable. My family photography sessions in London are relaxed and unhurried, giving your family space to simply be yourselves while I capture the connection between you.
What to Wear for Your Family Photography Session?
Choosing what to wear doesn’t need to feel complicated. I recommend soft, neutral tones and coordinating colours rather than matching outfits. Cream, beige, soft browns and muted earthy shades photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your family and the connection between you.
Try to avoid large logos, bold patterns and very bright colours, as they can distract from the people in the photograph. Most importantly, choose clothes that feel comfortable and allow you and your children to move naturally.
Before your session, I’m always happy to help with outfit choices so that everything feels beautifully coordinated without looking overly styled.
How to Help Children Feel Relaxed During the Session?
Children don’t need to sit still or smile at the camera on command. In fact, some of the most meaningful photographs happen when they are playing, cuddling, exploring or simply being themselves.
Try not to put too much pressure on them before the session. Instead, describe it as time together as a family. During the shoot, I’ll gently guide you when needed, but there is plenty of space for movement, play and natural interaction.
If your child needs a break, a snack or a cuddle, that’s absolutely fine. A relaxed experience is always more important than following a strict schedule.
What to Bring to Your Family Photography Session?
You won’t need to bring very much. For younger children, a favourite small toy, drink or snack can be helpful, along with anything they normally need to feel comfortable.
If your session includes a baby, bring your usual feeding and changing essentials. The most important thing, though, is to arrive without worrying about perfection. Your children can be themselves — that’s exactly what makes your photographs personal.
How to Prepare for a Family Photography Session on the Day?
On the day of your session, try to keep things as relaxed as possible. Give yourself plenty of time to get ready so that nobody feels rushed, especially if you are coming with young children.
A good meal or snack beforehand can make a big difference, and for younger children it can help to plan the session around their usual sleep and meal times where possible. You don’t need to practise smiles or ask children to behave perfectly for the camera. I want them to arrive ready to play, explore and simply be themselves.
When you arrive, we’ll take a little time to settle in before we begin. I’ll guide you throughout the session, so you never need to worry about where to stand or what to do with your hands. The aim is to create a relaxed family photography experience where genuine connection matters more than perfect posing.
